How to prevent dental cavity or dental decay: Anti Cavity strategies

Preservation of natural and undecayed teeth is most important in prevention of dental problems. The preventive strategies are multi—pronged but can be clubbed into 2 broad classifications:

  1. Home care               2. Dentist administered

Home Care: Correct Home care is most important. This includes:

  1. Tooth Brushing, at least 2 times a day if not after every meal, including night brushing.
  2. Correct tooth brushing technique with the right kind of tooth brush.
  3. Rinsing the mouth after every meal/ snack intake.
  4. Avoiding frequent intake of sticky sugary foods like caramels, candies, cakes etc.
  5. Intake of fibrous food like green salad, dry fruits etc.

Dentist administered strategies: These are applicable to all children as well as cavity prone/high risk adults. The anti-cavity regimen is meant to be used when there is no cavity or when the repair/restoration of existing dental decay has been completed. It is not a replacement of any corrective dental treatment needed.
